August 2 – Mary Chapin Carpenter and Bhi Bhiman
Over the course of her acclaimed career, Mary Chapin Carpenter has recorded 13 albums and sold over 13 million records. With hits like “Passionate Kisses” and “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” she has won five Grammy Awards (with 15 nominations), two CMA awards, and two Academy of Country Music awards. Her songs speak to the most personal of life’s details and the most universal. Her newest work, an orchestral album comprised of ten previously recorded compositions, titled Songs From The Movie, was released last year to widespread critical praise.
Bhi Bhiman is a first-generation Sri Lankan-American folk-rock recording artist whose voice and songwriting have been compared to Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen. Lauded by the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Sun Times, and NPR’s “All Songs Considered,” Bhiman is a talented lyricist, whose songs reflect a social consciousness that shifts between caustic humor and poignant revelation.
August 9 – Morris Day and The Time and Con Brio
Legendary funkmaster Morris Day returns as the frontman for The Time, one of the all-time greatest party bands. Featured with high school bandmate Prince in the hit film Purple Rain, Morris Day and The Time gained wide popularity with hits like “Jungle Love,” “Get it Up,” and “The Bird.” Morris Day appears with The Time’s original bandmates, vocalist Jerome Benton, drummer Jellybean Johnson, and keyboard artist Monte Moir. The Time recently performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” with Haim, recreating their signature sound for a new generation of fans.
Known for their fiery live shows, San Francisco group Con Brio is fronted by charismatic showman Ziek McCarter. The band’s sound traces a lineage from the dirty funk, blues, and the psychedelic legacy of Bay Area legends like Sly and the Family Stone, with a nod toward ‘90s neo-soul trailblazers like D’Angelo.
August 16 – Talib Kweli and Zakiya Harris featuring Elephantine
Brooklyn-based rapper Talib Kweli earned his stripes as one of the most lyrically gifted, socially aware, and politically insightful rappers to emerge in the last 20 years. Whether working with Mos Def as one-half of Black Star, partnering with producer Hi-Tek for acclaimed hip-hop duo Reflection Eternal, releasing landmark solo material, or collaborating with Kanye West or Madlib, Kweli delivers top-tier lyricism and crafts captivating stories.
Bay Area artist Zakiya Harris, along with her dynamic band Elephantine, seamlessly blends soul, electronica, hip-hop and Afro-beat music. Zakiya has shared stages with Talib Kweli, Dead Prez, Digable Planets, and Tatiana Ali, and has performed at Art Basel, Life is Living, The New Parish, Brick and Mortar, Cafe Du Nord, and The Legendary CBGB’s Gallery.She is also the Chief Education Officer of Hack the Hood, a technology program for low income youth of color and winner of the 2014 Google Impact Challenge.
NOTE: All concerts begin at 2 p.m. at Sigmund Stern Grove, located at 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard (in San Francisco’s Sunset/Parkside district) and are admission free; no tickets are required. Admittance is on a first-come, first-served basis.
